How Much Local History Do You Know?
At first glance, most people might guess that Leesburg was named after Robert E. Lee, but it actually got its name more than a century before the Civil War, in 1758. It was likely named in honor of Thomas Lee (Robert E. Lee’s great-grand-uncle) or perhaps the Lee family at large, as two of Thomas’s sons were town trustees.
European settlement in the Leesburg area began in the late 1730s, when Tidewater planters moved north from the south and east, establishing expansive farms and plantations. Many prominent First Families of Virginia, including the Carters, Lees, and Masons, were among those who settled here. Leesburg’s beginnings trace back to sometime before 1755, when Nicholas Minor acquired land at the intersection of the Old Carolina Road and the Potomac Ridge Road (today’s Route 7) and opened a tavern at the site.
Although the settlement around Minor’s tavern was small, its fortunes changed when Loudoun County was formed in 1757. Minor named the fledgling village “George Town” in honor of the British monarch, and in 1758, the British Colonial Council chose the crossroads as the site of the county courthouse. Minor laid out the town following the traditional Virginia plan of six intersecting streets, and on October 12, 1758, the Virginia General Assembly formally established the town of Leesburg on the 60 acres he had surveyed. When a post office was opened in 1803, it was called “Leesburgh” until the “h” was dropped in 1894.
Leesburg’s role in history extended into the 19th century. During the War of 1812, it briefly served as a refuge for the United States government and its archives, including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and portraits of early American leaders, when officials fled Washington ahead of the British Army. Later, marble quarried just south of Leesburg, known as Potomac marble, was used in the reconstruction of the United States Capitol.
